I notice that the piece on immigration to which you linked does not show any links to the source of the information that is presented. For me, I'd be interested in knowing the source if one is available.
A couple of selective clips from that piece, described as facts: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fastest growing group of illegals is not from Latin America. They are from Asian India. Their numbers have grown by 125% in the last 10 years, and yet are largely ignored. They come over here with H-1B visas, authorized to work in the US for a period of time, and never go back. These are the illegal immigrants who are taking the jobs that Americans want to do, and are educated and qualified to do. High paying jobs in Information Technology and Engineering. Hispanics are by and large relegated to unskilled labor, such as hospitality services, farm work, landscaping and food service. Those jobs that pay minimum wage that Americans really do not want to do (and can not afford to work at, if they want to have a decent standard of living).-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other sources show a different slant on such data. For example, from a piece in Wikipedia, a table lists the countries of origin of illegals in the U.S. as follows
en.wikipedia.org
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the countries of origin for the largest numbers of illegal immigrants are as follows (latest of 2009): [7]
Country of origin Raw number Percent of total Percent change 2000 to 2009 | Mexico | 6,650,000 | 62% | +42% | | El Salvador | 530,000 | 5% | +25% | | Guatemala | 480,000 | 4% | +65% | | Honduras | 320,000 | 3% | +95% | | Philippines | 270,000 | 2% | +33% | | India | 200,000 | 2% | +64% | | Korea | 200,000 | 2% | +14% | | Ecuador | 170,000 | 2% | +55% | | Brazil | 150,000 | 1% | +49% | | China | 120,000 | 1% | -37% | | Other | 1,650,000 | 15% | -17%

Another clip from your link:
Of the 5 traditional "gateway" states where illegals enter and settle, only 2 are actually on the southern border. Two of the others are actually northern states by Canada. This defies the notion that simply putting up a fence on the southern border (See the Berlin Wall) would have any real impact. And from Wikipedia:
As of 2006, [7] the following data table shows a spread of distribution of locations where undocumented immigrants reside by state.
State of Residence of the Undocumented Alien Population: January 2000 and 2006 State of residence Estimated population in January Percent of total Percent change Average annual change All states California Texas Florida Illinois New York Arizona Georgia New Jersey North Carolina Washington Other states | 11,555,000 | 100 | 37 | 515,000 | | 2,930,000 | 25 | 13 | 53,333 | | 1,640,000 | 14 | 50 | 91,667 | | 980,000 | 8 | 23 | 30,000 | | 550,000 | 5 | 25 | 18,333 | | 540,000 | 5 | - | - | | 500,000 | 4 | 52 | 28,333 | | 490,000 | 4 | 123 | 45,000 | | 430,000 | 4 | 23 | 13,333 | | 370,000 | 3 | 42 | 18,333 | | 280,000 | 2 | 65 | 18,333 | | 2,950,000 | 26 | 69 | 200,000 | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The total from the 2 "northern states by Canada": 1,090,000
The total from California, Texas, and Florida: 5,550,000
Edit: The data from the states does not show up well. The first line shows "All states". The next five lines show the totals from the first 5 states listed: CA, TX, FL, IL, NY. |
