They were a region of a country in the same sense that the Colonies were a region of England. Slave labor was already being converted to paid labor in other parts of the world, including the Northern States. There is no reason this could not happen in the South. Once the war started, none of that meant much. Pick a color grey or blue and destroy everything the other side stands for ... not much different than today with the Red and Blue BS.
