Paul: In a previous life, Intel's manufacturing group was one of my largest customers -- so I'm aware of the company's strengths in fabrication. And as said many times earlier, I'm a fan of the company and its strength in both fabrication, development, and marketing. I was sitting around this week cheering as the share price rose -- as were my parents and other relatives to whom I had recommended the stock late in 1995.

Where you and I disagree is that I don't see Intel being able to outspend its competition on R&D and fabrication as being proof that Intel will forever own the market for what the PC evolves into. If this were the case, IBM would totally dominate our industry since this same argument was made about them from 1960 through 1990.

Please don't get me wrong -- I'm not trying to argue that WebTV or the PlayStation will be what achieves 90% penetration -- but I'm arguing that (1) these things are better candidates than the bastardized NC and (2) that these things, while toys today, are much longer-term threats that I'd like to understand how Intel will respond to.

Let me bottom line this: I'm not selling my Intel shares any time soon.
I understand that tactically the company is in superb shape. It's when I try to look out 3-5 years or more that I am a bit concerned. Not worried (yet), but concerned -- because I'd rather see Intel change the rules of the game in that timeframe than (like Microsoft with the Internet) have the rules changed on it by others and then have to scramble and react.
