The ancient Greeks and Romans considered infanticide a GOOD thing. The Romans considered it acceptable for slaves to battle to the death against other men or against animals for the entertainment of crowds. The male head of a Roman household legally and morally had the power of life and death over everyone in his household, wife, children, slaves. Women in ancient Athens lived very much like women in modern Saudi Arabia live.

Even though they had in their society those who engaged in retail trade, they despised it:

There are two sorts of wealth-getting, as I have said; one is a part of household management, the other is retail trade: the former necessary and honorable, while that which consists in exchange is justly censured; for it is unnatural, and a mode by which men gain from one another.

Aristotle

The Greco-Roman world was one without pity. It's hard for modern folks to imagine what it was really like.
