They are dangerous at their core. Their natural instinct is to bite, twist, and rip. They were bred for that. I've heard owners say they are wonderful pets if you train them....however, if they feel threatened, they revert back to what they were bread for.

Some suggestions:
a nine iron - too bulky
a 9 mm - highly effective but too dangerous to others
ram your fist down their throat when they attack - ( dumbest thing I ever heard...they taught it in the Army)
a small billy club - best solution
air horn - pretty good but noisy
hire a trained bear to accompany you - effective but expensive
