I think this says something about what really motivates producers to create safe products. Financial exposure can be far more motivating than any amount of regulation. In the end, 3d printed parts are going to have to be good enough that financial exposure doesn't outweigh the cost differential vs. traditional methods of manufacturing, or it will not be used.

The focus ultimately will be on materials sciences, and that was what Drexler and Richard Feynman envisioned.
