My last China post -- now it's Rarebird's turn. Favorable trade balance in China.............

Copyright 1997 Asia Pulse Pte Limited ASIA PULSE December 05, 1997 SECTION: Nationwide Financial News LENGTH: 142 words HEADLINE: CHINA ANTICIPATES FAVORABLE FOREIGN TRADE BALANCE IN 1998 DATELINE: BEIJING, Dec 5 BODY: China's foreign trade turnover for 1998 is expected to rise by 12.5% to US$ 365 billion. Projections call for exports to grow by 10% to US$ 196 billion worth, with the import volume rising by 15% to US$ 169 billion. Factors which will contribute to the growth include reductions in import tariffs and increasing investment demand, according to a report released by an economic research institute under the State Planning Commission.
However, the foreign trade surplus for 1998 will drop to US$ 27 billion, according to the report. Growth for exports of general items is expected to slow somewhat on this year's high growth rate, while growth in imports will rebound due to policy incentives and the rising scale of investments. Figures for the processing trade are expected to remain at last year's levels. (XIC) LANGUAGE: ENGLISH
