It wouldn't have cost much at all to deport the illegal alien who killed a Harris county deputy two nights ago.

He had a prior DWI in 2012 but 1) Houston is a sanctuary city and 2) the Obama administration has a policy of NOT deporting people unless they commit a major crime and DWI isn't considered a major crime, till it kills someone:

Today's news: Illegal immigrant charged in crash that killed Harris County deputy

Charges have been filed against the man blamed in the fatal crash that killed a Harris County deputy early Sunday morning.

Officials said the crash happened around 3:10 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of West Little York and North Shepherd Drive in north Houston.

Sgt. Dewayne Polk was driving home from an extra job in his Chevy Silverado. Investigators said the 16-year law enforcement veteran had a green light and pulled into the intersection.

Houston police said he was then hit by Andres Munos, 22, who ran a red light.

"As he pulled into the intersection he was struck on the driver's side, t-boned by a GMC truck going at a high rate of speed and it struck him full impact," said Houston Police PIO John Cannon.

Polk died at the scene.

Officers said it appeared Munos was drunk and did not attempt to stop at the red light. Munos is not a U.S. citizen. Immigration has been notified of his arrest.

Munos suffered minor injuries and was taken to Ben Taub Hospital.

"Evidence in the GMC and what he told us lead us to believe that he was intoxicated," said Cannon.

Munos appeared before a magistrate judge Monday morning. Through an interpreter, Munos heard the allegations that he was drunk at the time of the crash, and is being held on the charge of intoxication manslaughter. He is being held without bond.

.... Police said the suspect suffered minor injuries in the wreck and was taken to the hospital prior to being taken to court. It was there he underwent a mandatory blood draw.

Polk, 47, had been with the sheriff's office for 16 years. On Sunday afternoon family and friends left small mementos at the Houston intersection where the deputy was killed.

“Tough morning," Sheriff Adrian Garcia tweeted. "The HCSO suffered a terrible loss & we are all grieving. Keep HCSO members & their families in your prayers."

According to the Houston Chronicle, Polk grew up in Houston with his two brothers, three sisters and many cousins. The Bible was among the books his mother used to teach him and his siblings to read, according to a 2012 obituary for his younger brother.

The suspect accused in Polk’s death has had trouble with the law before.

Records show he was arrested on June 10, 2012 for driving while intoxicated. He also was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon.

[ Despite his prior crime he wasn't deported. No, he was allowed to stay in the country, continue driving drunk till he killed a deputy sheriff. ]

In court on Monday, a judge indicated immigrations had a ‘hold’ on the suspect since he was apparently in the United States illegally.
