One day a number of years ago I got into a discussion of how the atmosphere transfers energy to create weather on the planet. I described how one day many years ago I had taken off from an airport near Seattle (airport elevation 16 feet MSL) in my Cessna and the outside air temp close to the ground was about 42 degrees F. The air mass was very stable (way below standard lapse rate) and it slowly rose to about 46 degrees at six thousand feet MSL. Suddenly climbing through about seven thousand feet the outside air temp had jumped to 80 degrees F! How could that be??

Anyway the guy I was talking to didn't believe it and he cited the second law of thermodynamics! I just started laughing my head off because he obviously knew nothing about how the atmosphere really works.

He had no idea of how "temperature inversions" actually happen.

Think very strong warm fronts sliding over the top of cold, stable air masses. Happens around the world on a daily basis.
