It just dawned on me the war on terror is like the war on drugs and global warming. A huge imaginary enemy is resurrected in front of the public who are told to be fearful and an entire industry springs into place to protect the rubes that fund and finance it. Jet fighters, airport scanners, prisons and hordes of law enforcement right up to judges and lawyers to make sure they are given fair trials and properly sentenced. No thought is ever given to winning the war, only keeping it going in perpetuity.

Michael Crichton talked expounded upon it in his book State of Fear.

All of these competing forces are vying for the attention of Greg Almighty who is enthralled by someone who never existed who did miraculous things that never happened.

“One can say this in general of men: they are ungrateful, disloyal, insincere and deceitful, timid of danger and avid of profit...Love is a bond of obligation that these miserable creatures break whenever it suits them to do so; but fear holds them fast by a dread of punishment that never passes.” Niccolò Machiavelli
