There's a lot of dangerous misinformation on the Internet about every topic under the sun, no doubt this also includes agave... my personal physician took the time and very clearly explained to me about numerous specific research studies regarding agave which he knows and trusts... let me give you an abbreviated summary here...

What agave is and where it comes from:

In brief, agave is 1.4 times sweeter than the standard processed regular granulated sugar... the difference is that agave is a true naturally sweet substance taken from the agave cactus plant grown predominantly in Mexico and is not anything like the artificially manufactured granulated sugars made in a factory that plays havoc with your blood sugar levels that eventually causes diabetes... the human body metabolizes agave very slowly and therefore does NOT give the body that sugar spike which effects your blood sugar level the same way that granulated sugar or corn syrup definitely does...

Here's the difference between agave and all other sugars in the body:

The pancreas has two main functions in the body, one of them is to produce insulin to regulate and lower our blood sugar level... it also produced glucagon to raise our blood sugar level during those hypoglycemic moments when we get especially hungry and physically weak, a diabetic individual suffers that hypoglycemic condition frequently and has to have something sweet to control it... this constant unnatural and continuous series of spikes in our blood sugar plays hell with our pancreas's ability to regulate our blood sugar level over time... at some point, the pancreas no longer works efficiently and cannot produce enough natural insulin or glucagon to keep our blood sugar level at a normal and safe level when sugar is introduced into our blood stream... this is what diabetes is, very basically stated, it's the pancreas's inability to produce enough insulin or glucagon to regulate our blood sugar level naturally, therefore the person would have to regulate his own blood sugar level by taking insulin externally, or by eating frequently or having a sweet candy to raise the blood sugar level quickly during those hypoglycemic moments... this condition is referred to as diabetes...

Sugar (and all other substances with a similar molecular structure) are extremely high up on the Glycemic Index... agave is so far down on the Glycemic Index, lower than an apple, that there are no blood sugar spikes since it metabolizes so much more slowly, so the pancreas is not influenced or effected in any way by the introduction of the agave into our diet... very clearly and with scientific certainty, this cannot be said for sugar or for ANY fake or artificial sweeteners which are dangerous and toxic to the body since the body is unable to metabolize those artificial sweetening substances...
