Biopure's Animal Hemoglobin derived substitute is an interesting concept. My feeling is that their vet product may sell well. I doubt any human being will want to get infused with bovine hemoglobin based product if another genetically engineered product is available.

In the field of vaccines, factor 8 concentrates, diagnostic thromboplastin etc., once genetically engineered products have become available; human or animal based products have rapidly lost market share. For Hemoglobin substitute, it will happen within no time.

I still believe that in the spectrum of products being tested, Somatogen has the most suitable product. Alliance Pharma's Perflubro based compounds come next. Human Hemoglobin based substitutes come third. Animal based Hb substitutes will have very hard time competing in such a scenario.
