Managers of $703 million RS Small Cap Growth Fund love innovators.

The fund started its current stake in InvenSense ( INVN) in the fourth quarter. It more than doubled its stake in Q1 to 823,000 shares. "We added on volatility," Chadwick-Dunn said.

Its innovation is motion sensing chips, which are in many wireless devices and game consoles.

"Their device is better than competitors' at pinpointing a user's location, especially indoors," Chadwick-Dunn said. " That has tremendous marketing potential."

The stock, which IPO'd in 2011, plunged 43% from its Q4 '12 high of 15.96 to a Q1 trough. The stock was battered by concerns about InvenSense's prospects for getting into the Samsung Galaxy 4 smartphone and a new iPhone. As those fears waned, the stock has rebounded above 12. Its Relative Strength Rating is still a weak 48.

EPS rose 14%, 31% and 100% the past three quarters.

The fund's innovators benefit from a wide variety of themes.
