There are several reasons which I've pointed out. But none is more important than the fact that the Obama campaign was successful in hiding the scandals (with considerable help from the media) until after the elections.

And Obama was generally a better slick-talking salesman. He had no record to run on, and he didn't -- he ran on everything except his own accomplishment, because frankly, there was none that people would have reelected him on.

Essential in this process was getting young voters, who essentially are predominantly ignorant or stupid, to support Obama. From an election mechanics point of view, this was essential to his win. But nothing was as important as hiding the scandals, which had the American people known about them, would (IMO) have changed the outcome.

A gullible America was sold a bill-of-goods by an excellent used car salesman.
