The set-top computer...

This will be another incremental market segment with the
potential for huge volumes. It will not be a replacement
for the PC. PC = Personal Computer. People love the
personal aspect. We humans do many things with PC's that
are "one person activities" (cept' for games), where
anybody else in the room would be bored.

TV's on the other hand are more living room/family oriented
devices. The convergence of computer type capabilities with
television is long overdue in my opinion. I can't wait
to get to a higher level of interactiveness than the
current ability to change channels and raise or lower the
volume. Imagine being able to block commercials...
believe me, someone will easily be able to figure this out
and there will be software availiable. I'll do it if
someone else does'nt.

Set top boxes have the potential to add many incredible
features to the television experience but IMO will have no
cannibalization impact on PC's.

One big hurdle is the lack of open industry standards
surrounding the archetectural/functional definition of
set top boxes. This likely means there will be a lot of
painful experiences with these things before we reach a
state of Nirvana.
