God also does not stop evil, even for those who love Him, because He tests us and He uses "tough times" for us to help build us and strengthen us.

I'm not sure much of a case can be made for this "free will" as a proof of a Creator my intuition tells me you are looking in the wrong place for proof , so its still all up to you? Following wisdom thats been pretty commonly discovered thru the ages & expressed by many philosophers, sages, buddhas or messiahs. So its a universal thing at best found in many a scripture or creed, certainly not dependent on being an atheist or a believer, the atheist has all the same access to all that good philosophy, sans "God" , as well.
Every human being goes thru the same stages of life from birth to death, the same changes in physiology & metabolism from activities of youth to later age. Sure, there are daily struggles which used to be just having enough to eat, now its how not to eat too much. There are people that have a huge problem just getting clean water let alone enough to eat, so they don't have this problem of overeating. Obesity is a huge problem for men & women in developed countries though, who do fall prey to sedentary living, one of the worst killers out there. So food becomes a great evil or which call would you make?
Speaking clean water, drinking plenty of it , i'm sure Jesus had another "ideal" meaning for this , but think for a moment about those that have little access to the real thing? Not all do you know, they would prolly rather have the clean water than the ascetic philosophy.
One can tell this fellow was fasting & leading the ascetic life,this kind of verse was spoken by sages
a 1000-2000yrs before Jesus who led the ascetic life, which is the heart of Christianity as taught by Jesus,
later to be socialized & institutionalized and even became secular.
