And I'll tell you couple reasons:
1. Old system worked just fine. If moderator wanted to prohibit anonymous rec's, they could - and people would have to comment on post to recommend it. IMHO, that's great. OTOH, if people want to recommend anonymously on a thread that allowed it, they could too.
2. IMHO, SI has been quite politicized. The new system will increase this. As soon as people see that Joe and Jane recommended left-leaning joke or post, while Bob and Barbara rec'd right-leaning one, that will transfer to their attitude towards posters in other areas.
3. There is clique and tit-for-tat mentality too. If someone rec's a post that's pro-Famous-Controversial-Company, the con-Famous-Controversial-Company crowd will circle their wagons.

Sure some of these are not to be avoided anyway. But I like the current system, where you can be public by answering the post and saying "Me too", "Good post" and you can be anonymous by rec'ing it. Now one of these options is gone.
