The Greeks invented hubris in addition to democracy and the first computer ( en.wikipedia.org ) :) Democracy did not turn out too badly for the West so far.

To avoid hubris, you should not count on the "new sovereign" until it actually happens. And you should not count that it will happen under the current system of "benevolent" dictatorship. Japan, Taiwan and South Korea turned to democracy before reaching developed nation status.
