Without enforced constitutional restraints on the powers of government, democracy is simply majority (i.e. mob) rule, with whomever's gang happens to be in power laying down the rules.

A constitutional republic and a democracy are two different animals. The USA began as the former, but the out of control, federal leviathan has evolved far beyond the original framework..
