Wallace never became a Republican. Died in 1998.

His wife ran and succeeded him in office when he could no longer run b/o term limits. She ran as a Democrat too.

When he was shot and crippled in 1972, he was running for President in the Democratic presidential primaries. He entered the 1976 Democratic primary as a Democrat too, but dropped out and endorsed Carter.

Alabama did away with their term limit law and so Wallace ran and won the governorship again as a Democrat in 1982 and served till 1987. He then retired from politics as a Democrat.

Just so you know not to believe that silly twit on MSNBC.
