A question arose as to whether or not APM was the supplier for the WDC 3" drive whose termination was announced; some even speculated that RDRT was the head supplier for these drives. I e-mailed some questions to RDRT IR, and here is their response:

1. We do not supply WD with heads for their mobile product which they
are terminating. Applied Magnetics is the supplier to this program
which was a low volume program. APM is also the sole supplier for the
1.7 GB/disk advanced inductive product which WD is also terminating.

2. We have signed a development agreement with Seagate and will be
developing MR recording heads for new high-end and desktop programs for
Seagate. They are paying us a fee for the development efforts. Also,
we are in final qualification with Seagate with our 2.1 GB per 3.5"
disk MR heads and are hopeful we will begin shipping heads to them in
the March 98 quarter. We are also in qualification with Seagate and
four other customers with our 2.8 GB/disk MR heads and expect to begin
volume production of this product in the March quarter.

3. Problems in Asia have almost no impact on RDRT.

Hope this answers your questions.
