I would feel more comfortable with a factory recovery of the system and start from scratch. You don't know how badly infected the computer could be, or if the person was surfing on illegal sites that could land you in hot water if you took the computer into a repair depot and they found illegal stuff on the computer. ie Child porn. You don't know the other person, you don't know here the sites the computer visited, or what hes got on the hard drive, even if deleted. Deleted is not deleted, you can recover that pretty easy. So I would wipe the hard drive and start fresh.

For the record I would never buy a used computer, only new. They are so inexpensive these days, just get a new one with a warranty.
