There are card readers that look just like USB sticks.

MIght not think it but it is a worthwhile investment. :-)

Especially after you miss a shot because your camera is connected to the computer, plus a little less "wear and tear" if you have a bunch of cards and sometimes need to examine the status of the cards.

And even more especially if your camera has one of those cable with the tiny connector and you have only one cable and can't find it.

As to corrupt files - disk recovery programs can sometimes recover files from a "bad" card.

There are programs, even free ones that claim to recover cards, for example:
sd_card_recovery_for_mac.en.softonic.com
(I'm not recommending yes or no as I have never used disk recovery. The one time I had corrupt files I believe I was still able to copy them to the computer, using above stick.)
