I agree, I think the US and other economies are over estimating the "economic" crisis in east Asia. The fact still remains that the Asian cultural norms value work and industry, they are technically and mathematically minded, and there is a natural proclivity for the precision, or rather psuedo-precision that computer technology represents. IMO, the computer industry will not see much of a lag, and not for very long. By the time the rest of the world realizes that east Asia has stabilized, the tech sector will show a marked rebound. I wouldn't be surprised if we are at that turning point right now. With the Korean stock market down ~50%, but with a economic rescue package in hand, we are ready to see a resurgence of the technology demand in Asia. And don't forget about RC and India, two huge populations whose economies are not included in this "downturn", and whose population can probably begin to afford the under $700 PC's which will become more and more available with integrated MPU's. (It would be interesting to find out at what point the demand for PC's become elastic and price sensitive in these economies.) |
