Cryptoanalysis has been a driving force in computer development. During WW2 the allies built early computers like Alan Turning's "bombes" and Tommy Flowers' Colossus. After the war, the allies cleverly sold captured German Enigma machines to developing countries, and were thus able to read their signal traffic. Spying is lots of fun! :o)
