Dear John..just read the latest ML(DEC5) report on the Semi:Build-to-order impacts industry..this and tight inventory mgmt by computer and other OEMs is creating difficulties for chip companies...slimmer margins on computer systems today..air of caution leading to reduced capital spending plans fro '98...constrict supply and re-establish lead times more in line with cycle times leading to stock inventory...Shortage Era Over..consumers are not upgrading very fast to pentium II machines because the extra power is muted by bandwidth limitations of their connection to the internet...We(TK) believe the conditions are now present for a protracted slowdown, essentially an extension or resumption of the 1996 correction, that could last into 1999.It will take time to reduce the overcapacity and to adjust downward future planned expansion..." Any comments on this bleak picture for '98?
