AT&T email account frozen: it finally happened to me. ID and/or PW didn't work but helpful AT&T offered to email me to restore access - to the email account I cannot access! Kindle Fire also stopped retrieving email.

I finally found an AT&T link where I could restore email service by answering security questions.
One email received said...

"This email is to advise you that your account may have been compromised. We recommend changing the passwords on your account(s). In case of active misuse the account will have the password invalidated. Be sure to select a password not used previously."

Seems like AT&T just froze my account, but didn't tell me that when I tried to sign in. When I restored service I entered the old PW as the new one and it was accepted [I changed it later]

lesson learned: save the support phone# away from the computer, but also change your PW now and then.
