Because the big thinking (republics) began with the ancient Greeks. They were the first large culture to engage in sustained free thinking. It was what Plato was doing that was so important, not any specific idea.

Plato, almost 2500 years ago wrote a book that hit the nail on the head. The Allegory of the Cave in The Republic by Plato.

Story: People are living in a cave and their reality are shadows on a wall, not even the real thing.

Paraphrased: One guys strays out of the cave into the sunlight and sees blue sky, green grass, birds singing, etc. It is beautiful, so he runs back into the cave to tell the rest of the folks what a wonderful thing he has just seen.

They kill him.

Sort of like, if I were to bring up a discussion of existentialism, or zen, while I am playing poker and they were watching a football game.

They would kill me.

Conservatives always want to kill liberals for their ideas-lol.

Plato knew that trip 2500 years ago.
