Speaking as an ex broker there are simple reasons why a broker
wants you to sell.

The biggest reason is that it frees up cash to buy something else. He
isn't making commissions on previously invested money. I suspect he
didn't try to talk you out of buying it. They seldom will. The risk of
failure is all yours and they still get the commission! And they can
always belatedly tell you what a bad investment it was.

It is indeed a smelly business.
