For years I kept a cable drawer that was as organized as a bowl of spaghetti. It had two or three of every cable ever made except the one I needed at any given time. It's been relegated to the purgatory of a box in the garage, on its way to the garbage bin.
Actually what I finally did was to spend one evening sorting through all my cables and little gizmos and finding some organizing principle. It just took an evening and otherwise searching each time would add up to much longer time!

I took gallon zip lock bags, put similar cables in each - eg. one bag for USB, another for firewire, another for the wacky Apple connectors, another for power bricks and so on, sometimes with sub bags - so the USB bag contains a bag for USB to clunky device, USB to little connector and USB to teeny tiny connector (excuse the technical terms here).

All those go into plastic tubs and into my closet under my shirts.
The USB memory sticks go into my sock drawer.
The blinky light novelty devices go into my underwear drawer (where else?).

Yeah.

A system!

That saved me a few times like when someone in my house whose name I will not mention borrowed my iPhone connector and I was going on a trip and I didn't want to have to buy yet another connector or the time I needed a firewire to get stuff off a wacky Apple laptop that I booted into firewire disk mode and where's that cable?

Instead of searching through mounds of spaghetti, I was organized!!!

It also saved my cable from my wife, who tends to throw out things that snake around on the floor for too long a period of time. Because of that I try not to lay on the floor too long.

Of course over time entropy builds and I will have to reorganize again soon.
