You have to argue the topic chosen for you, on the side that's assigned to you, using talking points that are already well-known by everyone in the room. Good debaters can argue either side of the question, so belief in the topic is hardly necessary. The emphasis is on organizing your thoughts and giving an effective presentation. I imagine that a high percentage of our politicians got their early training as high school debaters. ;)
