With HK telling the US that the extradition request was deficient, he had some assurance that HK was proceeding pursuant to its legal norms. Whether he would have been extradited is unknown, but I guarantee you he would have gotten a fair trial here if he had. A jury would have treated him fairly.

As someone who fled, his chances of bail were slim. Perhaps that was his concern...he would likely be imprisoned for at least two years before trial.
