Scott - Re:Your problems with Connected PCs.

Sorry to hear your tales of woe. Why didn't you (as the head of MIS) just allow the critical PCs to be hooked up to your network? It sounds like someone made a blanket decision to wire everything up to the network - a good group decision - and you were left with the clean up job.

Oh well.

As far as working in a networked environment, I worked in a small size company (900 employees) with about 8 different networks, ranging from SUN/NFS to Microsoft Lan Manager and everything in between. They were all bridged/routed together. We always had minor hiccups, but that was life. Nobody ran around wringing their hands praying for the return of the BIG MAINFRAME.

In essence, the NC seems to be a return to distributed terminals and THE BIG MAINFRAME. Ever wonder why this situation ever gave way to the PC industry in the first place?

Turning back the clock doesn't work.
