The company appears on track for a healthy fourth quarter, too, as sales of mainframe computers exceeded expectations for the first month of the quarter, said Gary Helmig, a SoundView Financial Group Inc. analyst. A little anecdote to share that possibly bodes well for IBM's mainframe sales over the next quarter or three: I work at a stock brokerage that is currently in the process (actually, it's happening exactly this weekend..) of putting in a new IBM mainframe in it's new data center. The old one is going to be used to run concurrent tests for the year 2000. Interestingly, I went for a job interview last week at a large telecommunications provider, and they told me they were bringing in additional IBM mainframes for exactly the same thing.
