Everything I've read, from Jay's French book to other things, suggests that QE of the size we've experienced indeed does set off a short term economic boom. Its deleterious effects are felt in the longer term. When the sugar high ends, the typical reaction is not to taper but to actually increase stimulus, precisely as the Japanese have done recently and the French did back in the day. We'll see in about a year what happens this time.
