"Made more intense by" is a theory that makes some sense, but for which there really isn't any evidence for.

Sandy was the largest tropical cyclone in terms of gale diameter since records began in 1988.

Since 1988 is a rather small dataset. Biggest since 1988 isn't very meaningful.

Also while it was big, it wasn't particularly intense. Peaked at 3, down to 1 or 2 by the time it slammed the East coast.
