Hi P2V,
Do you think the mainframe, now that cloud has become commonplace, stands a chance of replacing the commodity servers now being used?
How long will it be until someone develops the right processes to support the "consolidation" of thousands of servers into a single box, much in the same way that tens of thousands of corporate data centers were whittled down, through consolidation, to a relative few?
Amazing, the fractal nature of it all, and the persistence of the pendulum to defy conventional wisdom.
The one important attribute the brainiacs either forget or de-emphasize, while siting data centers on the other side of the globe -- in order to optimize power spending, is latency. So much attention is now going to optimizing the data center shell and innards for power consumption, at a time of shifting application profiles, that the IT and structural architects may not be giving sufficient thought to application needs.
By this I mean, making the overall scheme of data center interactions application-aware, with respect to the user communities they serve.
