Split shifts are used in tons of businesses and have been for as long as I can remember. They're very common in the restaurant business where people are needed from 11-1 and 5-8. It is a way of allowing employees to get in more hours than they otherwise would. Yet you complain about it.

40 years ago when I was running my dad's fast food joint (decades ago), we typically had people fighting over who could work split shifts. They loved it. I doubt if that has changed.

If someone doesn't like those hours and can't get around it, they need to find themselves another job. That how it works. If you don't like your job get another one.
