Thousands rally in Austin to renew fight against abortion law

by Joan McCarter

Thousands of Texans rallied in front of the state capitol in Austin Monday to protest the second special session of the state legislature, convened by the forced-birth brigade there to make women's access to reproductive health care as scarce as possible. The legislature is prepared to shut down the "mob rule" that prevented Texas Republicans from cheating Texas women out of their rights last week.

Wow "@UnrulyMobTX: Apparently the Capitol has shut off public wifi access. #rtx #yal #kbv2 #hb2 #sb5"
@MelangeCreperie

They've brought in horse-mounted state troopers from as far away as Houston, in addition to the more than "100 state police, many carrying helmets and truncheons, staged inside the Capitol building and newly erected crowd control barriers funneled visitors away from the entrances to the House and Senate chambers." According to Republican Sen. Donna Campbell, this "presence by law enforcement will help keep disruptive behavior from thwarting the democratic process." For many of us, the democratic process is exactly what we witnessed on the steps of the state capitol, not the perverted version Texas Republicans are practicing. You can read all about it at Burnt Orange Report's liveblog of the rally.

You can be part of the democracy movement in Texas and stand with Wendy Davis. Sign the petition and leave her an encouraging message. We'll pass all of those on to her.
