Whether Jesus existed or not he, one would have been invented, come along to fill that space anyways, for every whisper thru those times was of a messiah was coming. The reality is very little changes ever for the poor does it ? If you think that just Christians were persecuted, try looking at the city of Corinth's history some time , from its total destruction by the Romans 100yrs earlier & destroyed & sacked three more times down thru the centuries by just about everyone out there. ( geographically strategic, in some ways like Afghanistan , has nothing to do with a "god")
One cannot even begin to comprehend the immensity of all these centuries of suffering without end, hard to begin to grasp even a part of it unless you read up on it. This is why there is religion because of such natural brutality, disease & disasters, its a very darwinistic world. Which very well is where Darwin's Evolution is saying the same thing as the Church.
They call it a fallen world, Darwin would say "dog eat dog" & survival of the fittest, really exactly the same thing. If embracing Evolution is cause for shaking of faith, one could submit there's always been shakiness in faith to begin with all the way down the line. (people pretend otherwise)
If you're going to be Christian, Buddha had very good idea about that, keep it simple & be the very best one you can be, life is very short. (and there's alot of good Greek Stoic Philosophy included too)
