Not only do they have to watch cannibalization and preserve premiums, but the low-end model has to be good enough so that people want to buy it in the first place. An S3 - the peer of the iPhone 5 - can be had for peanuts now. People already view the iPhone 5 and S3 as similar-quality phones. If the cheaper model is a step back from the iPhone 5, it's hard to see throngs of people paying more for less.
Let's take a closer look at what you just said. If the S3 is the peer of the iPhone 5 and is sooo much cheaper (and it really is much cheaper, peer is a rather dubious description however), and if people (note that you did say people, not some people or many people) already view the iPhone 5 and S3 as similar quality, then why are throngs of people still paying more for less (less according to your description) in stark contrast to your evaluative conclusion, "it's hard to see throngs of people paying more for less."

Is your conclusion just a self deprecating statement about your ability to analyze objectively? Do you see the broken spring in the logic of your evaluative metering of consumer behavior vis a vis these two devices?

Here's a video review of the iPhone 5 vs the Samsung S3, if you're interested. I wont spoil the ending by saying which one wins out. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter to you anyway.
