That last quote is referring to the upcoming generation (low cost iPhone versus competing Android devices in the similar price range once it is released), NOT to the past history of iPhone sales. A couple years ago, the iPhone was arguably the best smartphone on the market, justifying the premium. Now there are several phones that beat in on a variety of specs, functions, and other measures. The iPhone still sells millions largely because of its installed userbase, devoted fans, and those heavily invested in and locked into its ecosystem. They need to keep feeding the beast with leading products to keep that up.
Here's a video review of the iPhone 5 vs the Samsung S3, if you're interested. I wont spoil the ending by saying which one wins out. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter to you anyway. I can just as easily cherry-pick a video showing the S3 as an overwhelming video. To those who care about voice-assisted search (Siri vs Google Now) and maps (Google vs Apple), it's a blow-out for the S3 and other Android phones. It's indisputable that on an *objective* basis, the S3 (which is months older than the iPhone 5) is comparable in specs and features. Yes, you can find a broad range of opinions saying one is better than the other subjectively, but they are peers in the objective sense. The best way to see this is the the S3 was *the* phone that started the Apple slide in terms of market share losses. Customers bought the S3 in droves, many comparing it directly to the iPhone and choosing it instead.
All of this ties into my point that if Apple sells a iPhone 5 Jr, it will be of lesser objective quality/specs/functions, but it will be going up against at *least* something as robust as the S3 in a similar price range. The S3 is now available new for very little, while a new iPhone 5 is still quite expensive. |
