They sell millions because A) the iPhone 5 is a very nice phone in absolute terms, and B) They have a massive installed and devoted user base that won't just evaporate overnight... gives them the ability to "run on fumes", which is essentially what they are doing now as they are growing more slowly than competitors.

The installed base doesnt explain the 40% share in the US or the 50% share in Japan. Apple doesnt have anywhere near that percentage of the total wireless market so they are obviously grabbing new consumers. The same is true in a variety of developing markets.

I hate to break it to you, but millions of people are new to iOS and picking the iPhone over the various Galaxy handsets.

That cheaper phone will be going against some very robust cheap phones, such as the S3.

Sure, that is a good handset, but far more consumers have been picking the iPhone 5 despite its significant price premium. What is going to happen when a cheaper iPhone undercuts the S3 on price?
There used to be a market for $400 Android tablets. That didnt last after the iPad Mini undercut them.
