| | | New York Times Acknowledges That Herman Cain Exists .................................................................................................. June 6, 2011 charlestonteaparty.org
This New York Times article on Herman Cain threw me for a loop. I found it fair, objective and on point. I’m sure the editor that allowed it to be printed will be looking for another job shortly. If so, it’ll be just another in a long line of shakeups at the Old Gray Lady’s house.
A little history on Mr. Cain’s rising star, as mentioned in the article:
He became a folk hero among Republicans in 1994, when he challenged President Bill Clinton on his health care legislation during a televised town-hall-style meeting
Here’s the video of that classic exchange, in case you’ve not seen it:
Slick Willy’s flummoxed expression as he throws out his own “facts and figures” in an unsuccessful attempt to trip up Mr. Cain is priceless, and he wants to move on to the “next question”. Willy, you got spanked!
Back to this NYT article. The only statement that I completely disagreed with was:
“……As a black conservative, he appeals to Tea Party supporters who are angry at being tagged racists for their disagreements with the nation’s first black president.”
Baloney! I think his appeal has zero to do with his race….it’s his message, stupid!
And, the “establishment” Republicans react predictably to Mr. Cain:
“Karl Rove and other Republican notables have dismissed Mr. Cain as little more than a good personal narrative. Mr. Cain dismisses them.
‘They don’t get it,’ he said. ‘There is a big disconnect between the quote unquote establishment and regular folks. The people on the ground get it.”
Amen.
And true to usual NYT form, the writer mentions Cain’s support for the Fair Tax, ever so superficially:
“The center of his platform is the so-called fair tax, a 23 percent consumption tax that would replace the federal income tax.”
….with no mention that it also replaces other federal taxes like Medicare, Social Security, and abolishes the IRS….but those are just inconvenient details.
Finally, Mr. Cain contrasts himself with the current White House occupier thusly:
Liberals, he said, ‘are scared to death of me. They don’t want me to go up against their beloved Obama. I have done stuff, fixed stuff, can explain stuff and run stuff. He’s been a community organizer, he’s got failed policies. He reads from the teleprompter, I don’t. I’ve got common-sense solutions, he passes 2,700-page legislation. The contrast would be so obvious, and when you get past all of the quantitative stuff, they can’t use race to cover for him.”
Good on ya, Herman. Hold strong, it’ll be a rocky ride, sir. |
