Compared to 2000, the decline in worker participation is 6%, back to levels in the late 70s when it was common for a family to have one wage earner. Trouble is, now they have two-wage-earner expenses -- bigger houses, more cars, far more expensive schooling for their kids. It's no wonder the birthrate in the US is plummeting.
