Funny. I just started a similar project to convert my HI8 tapes to digital - I've got in the neighborhood of about 50 of them. I have an old Video Director that would convert the tapes to VHS but that doesn't help now.

I still have my HI8 camera and have hooked the camera up to the TV, which makes very nice viewing. I tried recording the TV screen using my iPad and the result is okay - you can see what's going on - but it isn't optimal - and it's hard to hold the iPad steady for any length of time.

My next attempt will be to put my digital camera on a tripod and record the TV screen that way. It will be a production: RCA cables running from the TV to the camera; camera set up in VCR mode and operated with a remote control. Digital camera on a tripod pointed at the TV. Edit as I go along. Then transfer the result via SD card to the computer. Then upload to YouTube so family and friends can see them. These go back 20-25 years.
