Natural gas production in New York decreased 15 percent in 2012, according to new state data , marking the sixth year in a row the state’s natural gas yield has decreased...
...Jim Smith, spokesman for the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York, an industry-funded trade group, said the downward trend in New York is the result of energy companies moving to other states where regulators allow hydrofracking in shale formations.“Right now, all of the work is in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and so our members are doing the work there,” Smith said. “They’re running out of patience with New York, and that is shown in those numbers.”
Smith said there were 550 permits issued for new drilling in New York in 2008, a number that dropped to 163 in 2012.
The decrease last year brought natural gas production in New York to its lowest level since since 2000, when 17.8 billion cubic feet were produced... |
