As I recall, the law used to require the homeowner to clearly be in danger in order to shoot an intruder.
Some years ago in a nearby town , a fellow shot and killed a teenager who had broken into his garage and was fleeing.
He was tried and convicted, but I don't recall the sentence. That caused quite a stir by the "shoot first ask questions later" crowd. The laws vary from state to state.
