If memory serves, the primary ethanol producer in the USA is Archer-Daniels-Midland, which is a massive agro-business company (also mentioned in connection with some scandals recently -- price-fixing, I do believe). For a number of years, there has been a US government subsidy of some sort for producing corn-based ethanol.

In Brazil, I believe that the ethanol is derived from sugar beets, perhaps the excess "tailings" left over after the sugar has been squeezed out of them?

A number of years ago, Texaco proudly featured the fact that a portion of their high-test fuel was alcohol based -- called it "Gasahol" if memory serves. It has advantages of cleaner burnging and better knock-resistance (it raises the "octane" rating of the fuel), and avoids problems with water in fuel lines (because water and alcohol will mix), and eats the heck out of some earlier synthetic gaskets and fittings in the fuel system <wry grin>.
