Chromac, it looks like the INTC software works with a piece of
format converter hardware from Hitachi (or others).

It can be done in software on a Pentium II alone, but it will not be very good quality. More like an HDTV browser.

INTC is quietly doing some work in the leading-edge software area,
maybe this is one of the results.

If Intel is doing any advanced video development, then it will probably come from their Folsom, California site (where they are working on their secret Media Processor chip).

Wouldn't the format conversion take place after the MPEG2 decode at the appropriate profile/level?

The format conversion is done deep inside the decoder itself. patent.womplex.ibm.com. It impacts critical timing blocks, so cube and others may have a hard time keeping up unless they started a while ago.

This new class of "trans-decoders" should fit well within 4 Mbyte of DRAM (rather than the full 16 Mbyte of a real HDTV decoder, and 2 Mbyte of your familiar Main Level implementation) and cost about 25% more than a standard DVD/MP@ML decoder in terms of hardware area (probably more costly for software... say 33%).

CHROMAC
"May your memory technology have large latencies, thereby not permitting you to trans-decode at the 250,000 macroblock/sec Main Level rate."
